As a South Islander, I don’t often travel across the strait to the North Island and, even though I’m well past the half-century, I can count the times I’ve actually been in Auckland on the fingers of one hand. Indeed, the last time I visited the City of Sails was way back in the mid-’80s — it’s certainly changed a lot since then!
Anyway, as I contemplated being dragged along kicking and screaming to the big smoke for a family wedding, my griping started to level off when I realized that I’d be in Auckland for the big Ellerslie classic car show. And, with the wedding taking place on Saturday, ‘she who must be obeyed’ told me that Sunday would be a ‘free’ day as far as I was concerned.
As a result, after punching ‘Ellerslie Racecourse’ into the satnav unit glued to the dashboard of our hire car, Sunday morning saw me heading off bright and early for the show so as to get there ahead of the crowds. That turned out to be a waste — I arrived at Ellerslie well before official opening time but still found myself in a queue to enter the grounds! However, the brief wait was well worth it; the first sight on entering being a delectable line-up of past and present Aston Martins, and it just kept getting better. So much to see!
I dropped by the Nzclassiccar stand and picked up a few back copies I’d missed for some reason, gawped at the amazing Back To Thefuture Delorean for ten minutes and then stepped back out into the sunlight to be confronted with a mouth-watering selection of Italian thoroughbreds — everything from Ferraris to Fiats, as well as Lamborghinis and Lancias. The icing on the cake had to be the simply stunning cars gathered within the Winners Circle — a brace of truly gorgeous Astons, a posse of Mustangs and, of course, a simply amazing Gullwing Mercedes. I have to give it to you Aucklanders — you certainly put on a great show!
Anyway, I just wanted to write in to let you know that you absolutely brightened up a trip to the big smoke that I hadn’t been especially looking forward to. Charlie Cosgrove, via email We’re glad you enjoyed the show, Charlie — here’s hoping that ‘she who must be obeyed’ doesn’t twig by reading this copy of NZ Classic Car! AGW
