On a cheerier note, congratulations to Earl Bamber who, along with Nico Hülkenberg and Nick Tandy, won this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours at the wheel of a Porsche 919 — read about it elsewhere in this issue. Adding icing to the cake, fellow Kiwi Brendon Hartley drove his 919 into second place to record Porsche’s one-two win. The last time a Kiwi won at Le Mans was way back in 1966, when Bruce Mclaren and Chris Amon drove their black Ford GT40 to victory — so, well done to Earl for recording a truly historic win.
The Le Mans weekend was a also a good one for Kiwi rally fans with Hayden Paddon scoring his first podium finish at an international rally event as runner-up at Rally Sardinia.
Finally, I’d like to acknowledge NZ Classic Car reader, Charles Beresford, for gifting us 18 boxes of vintage motoring magazines. Titles included Modern Motor and Sports Car World amongst many others — the main prize being a large pile of Motorman magazines. Many thanks Charles, rest assured your old magazines will be put to good use as valuable reference resources.
