Daimler & Lanchester Owners Club in New Zealand Inc

New Zealand Classic Car - - CLUB CORNER -

The Daimler & Lanchester Owners Club in New Zealand (DLOCNZ) was formed in Christchurch in 1971 by the late Gordon Sommerville and Laurie Wason. Branches were set up soon after in Otago, Wellington, Manawatu, Hawkes Bay, Waikato/ Bay of Plenty and Auckland. The club also maintains contact with affiliates in Great Britain, Australia and North America. Gordon went on to set up a separate organization solely for the comprehensive supply of spare parts (see daimjagspares.org.nz). Daimler and Lanchester cars were the first marques to be manufactured in Britain, dating from 1896. Ultimately, the BSA organization purchased first Daimler and then Lanchester, so the club caters for the owners of BSA cars as well. Today, DLOCNZ has 170 members with active branches in Auckland, Waikato/bop, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu and Otago. The principal objectives of the club are to preserve and promote these historic vehicles, providing members with technical assistance to keep their vehicle in a safe and roadworthy condition. The club publishes a bimonthly magazine reporting on branch activities, and including technical articles, information from overseas associates, and a Members Marketplace for those wishing to buy or sell cars or parts. Another section of interest to more recent members recalls items of interest from the four decades of knowledge recorded in previous editions of magazines. Many of these articles date back to the time when many of the club’s ‘old’ cars were quite new! Often there is a small allocation of humour, as well. An important aspect of the club is the social camaraderie. Branches organize their own monthly events which include drives to places of interest, car shows, garage raids, technical evenings and, of course, the most popular involve BBQS, cafés and dining. Those ladies not interested in the cars are always catered for with destinations that will interest them as well. Each year an allocated branch hosts a National rally, with a major event every three years and a lower-key event in the two intervening years. The National AGM is timed to take place at these events. Concours judging and presentations are only held at the major event. These rallies are always a great celebration, and a time to exchange stories with members from all over New Zealand. The club operates its own website — daimlerclub.org.nz — which contains general and contact information, magazine back editions and a new member enrolment form. There is also a live Facebook page to follow. In some instances, a DLOCNZ Branch may share an event or outing with other local clubs, or maybe a lighthearted competitive challenge! If you own, or have an interest in Daimler, Lanchester or BSA cars, you are most welcome to join the club. Subscriptions are very low, at $35 pa.
