Editors’ PICKEACH 1983 Mitsubishi Cordia GSR
MONTH WE SELECT ONE OUTSTANDING CAR FROM OUR CARS FOR SALE PAGES
Todd Motors, the Petonebased vehicle manufacturing plant, produced some iconic vehicles over the years, such as the Hillman Hunter, the Minx, Chrysler Alpine, and even a range of Dodges and De Sotos. However, it wasn’t until more recent times that it started producing Mitsubishis such as this 1983 Mitsubishi Cordia GSR. Love ’em or hate ’em — there’s little doubt that this particular onelady-ownersince-new example is in astonishingly original condition for its age. It’s been owned by that single lady — by the name of Betty — since it left the Todd Motors factory in 1983, and the car’s overall appearance shows that it’s had very little use over the years. Unfortunately Betty recently passed away, so it’s now up to her Aucklandbased family to move the Cordia on. The car has been stored in a garage since 1983, has had blankets covering the rear seats, and sheepskin covers on the fronts. As you can imagine, it’s like stepping into a time machine, taking you straight back to the early ’80s — it’s like new. In the early ’80s, the turbocharged variant of the Cordia — dubbed the GSR — was the one to purchase. The 1600cc fourcylinder engine, turbocharged with a blow-through carburettor setup, has ample grunt to propel the twodoor coupé more than adequately. This example also boasts the factory-fitted ‘Power, and Economy’ lever, Mitsubishi-speak for an overdrive unit operating on the fourspeed gearbox, effectively giving it eight forward gears. There is no power steering in this old girl, but if an elderly woman could handle it, then it can’t be too arduous on the biceps. Engine, gearbox and interior are in immaculate condition, however, there is a small line of rust fighting through the paint on the rearquarter panels above the rear wheels — a common problem with these models. If you have the guts to purchase the Cordia, do it up in the required areas, and you’ll certainly have yourself a unique Japanese car — perhaps even a future classic — to hold on to. The vehicle even comes complete with the original Todd Motors Warranty card, receipt, servicecare plan, and original registration papers — a must for any proficient classic collector.
