Escort memories

New Zealand Classic Car - - Readers’ Writes -

Donn Anderson’s article (page 50, Issue No. 308, August 2016) sparked a great memory-lane journey. I spent much of the ’70s in various marketing roles in Ford New Zealand, and Escort was a very big part of my work in those days: some of the highlights that come to mind include ordering the bulk shipments of CBU [completely built up] Escort 1300 GTS and 1300 Sports in 1973/’74, the launch of the MKII model in 1975 and the 1600 Sport in 1977, coordinating our marketing with the Masport rally team and their successes year after year, and importing a genuine UK RS2000 for the Benson and Hedges endurance race (1978 I think, Denny Hulme / Mike Hailwood were the drivers; the car was prepared by Masport). The 1978 Motogard Rally also stands out, with Escorts first to sixth, and eight in the top 10, and the advertisement headline we used was adapted from Meatloaf’s hit song, “Eight out of 10 ain’t bad”!

The crowning piece of Donn’s story — the pic of the 1980 Escort lead car that Rob Wylie and I drove that year!
