The Early Holden Club of Auckland (Inc) was formed in 1983 by a group of enthusiasts who share a passion for Holdens in their original condition. The club now has over 70 members, and accepts new members whether they currently own a Holden or not. The vehicle range caters for both original and restored to original examples of Holden models from 1948 (48-215) to 1984 ( WB). Cars with mag wheels, modern paint colours and interiors and body or engine alterations are not eligible. “There are many other Holden clubs in New Zealand, but this is the only one which insists on originality,” said Club president, Glenn Flinkenberg.
It is perhaps this focus on originality that has ensured the club has twice won the Teams Event at Intermarque Concours d’élégance — in 2003 and 2012. Not only that, but since the inception of the Survivor class in 2014, it has claimed two first places, with an EJ Special sedan and an EH Premier sedan, and a second place with Glenn’s HD Premier sedan. That said, Glenn told us, “People are often scared of joining a club because they think their car has to be award winning condition, but there are a lot of really nice, original cars cruising around that we’d love to have in the club. We have a wide range of cars already, from clean, original examples right through to Concours winners so, please get in touch if you would like to join the club.”
He says that a lot of people grew up around early Holdens, and in the ’60s Holdens were considered the family car, which contributed to its title as the biggest-selling brand in the country.
Now the club regularly hosts its own events, with at least one major run per month, tours, social outings and attendance at all the big shows.
A monthly club meeting is run for all members and any visitors who may wish to attend on the first Tuesday of each month at Avondale Lions Club Hall (on the corner of Great North and Rosebank Roads in Avondale, Auckland). These provide an excellent opportunity for members to swap stories over a cuppa and talk about past runs as well as upcoming events. New members can get acquainted in a casual environment and gain further information on vehicles and upcoming events.
