After Ford’s withdrawal from the World Rally Championship in 1978, Ari Vatanen switched over to the Rothmans Rally Team and would go on to take his first win in the Ford Escort RS1800 MKII at the Acropolis Rally of Greece in 1980 — known for being extremely tough on competing cars and drivers due to the very dusty, rough, and rocky mountain roads around Athens during the Greek hot summer period. Vatanen would go on to become the first driver to earn the title World Rally Champion without an official factory team the following year — a feat that remains unbroken to this day.
