New Zealand Classic Car - - PRICE ON -

This 1982 Hyundai 1238cc Pony TLS is possibly the last of the rear-wheel-drive models. Research has revealed that they were first imported into New Zealand in September of 1982, retailing at $10,990. This car may well prove to be the oldest Hyundai in New Zealand.

Discovered in an old 1950s–’60s service station that had been closed for decades, the car has only had three owners since new, the last of which inherited it from his mother, who had owned the three-door hatch since 1984.

The interior is mid blue and is virtually like new, with the factoryfitted clear plastic still covering the door panels. The front and back seats, which are trimmed in a corduroy-type cloth, were also covered from new with rugs, resulting in not a trace of fading.

The Hyundai is currently undergoing an extensive makeover by the owner in Amberley, North Canterbury, but not a full restoration, as he wishes to retain as much originality as possible. The front suspension and steering mechanism have been removed and disassembled, sand blasted, primed and sprayed in a black gloss for ease of cleaning when back on the road. The rear suspension will receive the same attention. It is aimed to be enjoyed at classic car events in about two years or less. The owner would like to learn of any other pre1990 Hyundais in New Zealand. He can be contacted at stancar_nzcc@hotmail.com.
