CITY GALLERY WELLINGTON PRESENTS SHANNON TE AO’S 2011 PERFORMANCE
Shannon Te Ao’s 2011 video performance, Untitled (McCahon House Studies), is being shown at City Gallery Wellington until July 30. Te Ao’s work will be presented alongside City Gallery Wellington’s showing of Colin McCahon’s On Going Out with the Tide. As the subject of the show is appropriations of Maori culture, Te Ao’s work fits perfectly. Art writer Martin Patrick says that Te Ao’s work creates “chaotic entanglements of past and present, then and now, Pakeha and Maori, bicultural nation states and indigenous traditions, belief systems, and protocols.”
Untitled (McCahon House Studies) sees Te Ao occupy McCahon’s former family home in Titirangi. It is the location in which McCahon made much of his work back in the 1950s. It is now a museum with an artist residency. During the performance, Te Ao addresses the demands of creativity and family, all drawing on McCahon’s life experiences.
