It was a crisp late-autumn day following Cromwell’s first snowfall, and Victoria caught sight of a familiar scene: the sun setting behind the Pisa Range. One of nature’s everyday displays of artistry, it created a beautiful shadow on the eastern horizon. It was one of those ‘just have to stop’ moments that only photographers understand but that her family have become accustomed to — not to mention her sometimes rather ‘loose’ ETAs. “In winter, once the sun sets behind the Pisa Range, the temperature drops like a stone. It was certainly chilly when I captured this scene of the metallic water and reflection over a popular summer swimming platform,” says Victoria, who shot the image handheld. “When composing this image, I wanted to include the geology of the schist chips on the lake edge to add texture and integrity to the image … to draw the eye into what makes Central Otago so structural, eroded, and constantly in a battle with nature’s ferocity.”
