While camping in his truck out at Gillespies Beach, Ben Jackson rose extra early one morning to capture the sunrise at Lake Matheson. After some cat-andmouse with the cloud, he called it quits and headed back to the truck. Opting instead for a walk, he happened to come across a huge area covered in bright yellow blooms. The buttercups are an endemic alpine flower, found only within the central part of the Southern Alps between Aoraki / Mount Cook, and Arthur’s Pass national parks. Though delicate enough to be withered by the lightest touch of frost, they thrive in one of New Zealand’s more hostile environments. With the cloud hanging over the alps having cleared, revealing a great background, Ben took his shot.
