Sarah’s a jetsetter-cum-photographer — and winner of our 2017 Sigma Amateur Photographer of the Year competition. In between stops along her many trips abroad, she spends her time seeking out the world’s most special architectural sites. On one of her short visits to the capital, she stumbled upon this spectacular stairwell within the Wellesley Club Building, now home to the Wellesley Boutique Hotel. Nearly 100 years old, it’s now listed as a Category 1 heritage building, and is considered one of the finest examples of Neo-Georgian architecture in Wellington. Now meticulously restored — from the spiral staircase to the floor tiling and light fittings — the building is a testament to the character and beauty of the era, combining modern features and design in keeping with its integrity and character. “I am always on the lookout for buildings that might have beautiful staircases, and as this was a lovely old one and had a sign saying ‘Public Welcome’, I ventured in, saw the staircase, and asked if I could photograph it,” explains Sarah. Though Sarah shot around 20 different compositions, the image pictured, shot on Sarah’s widest Laowa 12mm lens, was an easy choice. “I really enjoy lines and shapes in general, and for me, often interiors yield more interesting combinations and colours than exteriors. With an ultra-wide angle I can transform and enhance those lines to something a little more creative.”
