It was late in the afternoon on a warm summer’s day, and Stephanie was waiting to capture something when her attention was caught by a flash of colour glimpsed out of the corner of her eye. At first look black but with feathers that glimmered iridescent blue and green as they caught the light, it was a beautiful tui, delightedly drinking the nectar of an aloe vera flower. So as to not miss the moment, Stephanie remained indoors, camera in hand, and positioned her shot through a window. “I knew I didn’t have a lot of time, and I would only get one shot before it flew away,” she said. The perfectly timed picture captures our most boisterous native bird brimming with personality, and sums up exactly what Stephanie loves most about photography: “I can tell stories with my photos. Because of my disability, I find it difficult to get people to understand me, but I can do this through my photos. I enjoy capturing wonderful moments in time.”
