Those that meet me now as­sume I have al­ways been a well-built mus­cu­lar guy – well that couldn’t be fur­ther from the truth. I have in fact been on both ends of the physique spec­trum, tall, skinny lanky teenager, to leav­ing high school and not know­ing a thing about nu­tri­tion and go­ing from 75kg to 108kg in two years with ab­so­lutely no mus­cle.

I knew a change was needed as I had lost all self-con­fi­dence in my ap­pear­ance. Af­ter liv­ing abroad for nine years I moved back to New Zealand and lived with my sis­ter Roseanne, who was a big fit­ness ad­vo­cate and who her­self had gone through a rad­i­cal post­na­tal trans­for­ma­tion. Her story was pub­lished weekly in a lo­cal news­pa­per and the amount of peo­ple she was able to reach out to and en­cour­age and mo­ti­vate was amaz­ing – in­clud­ing me. She told me if she could do it then so could I. So it be­gan with my first gym mem­ber­ship at Les Mills in Hamil­ton where she was shoul­der press­ing more then me. I had all the mo­ti­va­tion I needed right there, haha.

With con­sis­tency and hard work I be­gan to see changes, I lost weight, be­came more con­fi­dent and de­vel­oped pride in my­self again. I lost a to­tal of 28kg, but now the fat was gone there wasn’t much left on me.
