Like many golfers Willie Moore was introduced to golf by one of his parents, in his case his father. His golfing life started at the age of 11 with him caddying for his father on the 9-hole Tarras course in Central Otago.

Like all kids who want to be doing things he soon got sick of caddying and started playing with a few of his mates from primary school.

Instantly hooked by the game he spent his afternoons after school hitting golf balls in the paddocks of the family's farm. Within four years he had reached a scratch handicap.

“I have always had fairly good hand-eye co-ordination, so I think that helped me to become decent pretty quickly. I especially enjoyed the short-game (putting & chipping), and felt like that was an advantage even though I didn't hit the ball very far”

During his teenage years, he played most of his golf at Cromwell where he went to high school. Little did he know then that Cromwell and its Golf Course were going to become a very big part of his life.

As a typical boy interested in, and doing well at his chosen sport he enjoyed his practice time and looked forward to it, it wasn't a

chore. And, like anyone obsessed with their sport he spent many hours practicing.

He dreamed of one day becoming a Pro Golfer so in 2010 and in his early 20's he turned that dream into a reality and moved to Melbourne to expand his golfing horizons and become a Tour Pro.

Once there and after speaking to some people in the golf industry his plans and focus changed slightly.

“I decided on starting a PGA Traineeship under the Australian PGA. This way I could play professional tournaments whilst gaining experience working in the golf industry. This was the best decision I ever made, as I learnt so much during my 3-year Traineeship.”

While living in Melbourne and following his dream Willie played the Pro-Am circuit in Victoria and managed to travel around Australia a little as well.

His tournament highlights during this time were playing in the Victorian Open, Western Australian Open & Western Australian PGA tournaments. He also got to play in the NZ Open.

As a trainee working in the proshop and then teaching at Spring Valley Golf Club in the Melbourne ‘Sandbelt', playing tournament golf started taking a back seat.

“This [working in the Pro-shop] was a great experience for me, as I realized my passion was working at a club helping golfers enjoy the game more - whether it be through coaching, club-fitting, or simply booking a tee time.”

In 2014 Willie decided it was time to come home. On his return, he transferred his membership with the Australian PGA to the New

Zealand PGA and started working as the Head Teaching Professional at The Hills Golf Course in Arrowtown where he spent a year.

When the position of Director of Golf at Cromwell Golf Club became available in 2015, Willie took the opportunity to move back to his roots with his young family and set up his own business ‘Moore Golf' where he can put more into helping people enjoy playing golf. He does admit to some frustrations with the game though.

break down some of these barriers to encourage more people to play this great game!”

Now that he has well and truly established himself in Cromwell and at the Club Willie wants to grow his business which offers coaching, retail shop, club fitting and club repair services.

He is also looking further afield than just building his business and is working with other businesses to promote Cromwell and Cromwell Golf Club as a golfing destination for visitors and as a member friendly club for locals.
