GERMAN TRUCK MAKER MAN HAS STARTED building its first-ever van, the TGE, at a new factory in Wrzesnia, Poland.

MAN says it’s building the TGE, which is based on the new Volkswagen Crafter, to meet a demand from many of its established truck customers.

The expansion of online shopping, harmonised driving licence regulations, and vans’ versatility and carlike handling and performance are driving European transport operators’ demand for vans.

Increasing urbanisation is also fuelling demand for vans to complement trucks in cities and towns, MAN adds.

The high-roof TGE is around six metres long has 10.7 cubic metres of cargo volume, and is powered by a 1968cc turbodiesel engine developing 103kw.

New Zealand MAN agent Penske says that when a right-hand drive version becomes available to it, it will almost certainly bring the TGE here.

MAN has built its first TGE van; once right-hand drive versions are made available the van is almost certain to be sold here.
