MITSUBISHI ASX Facelifted compact SUV gets extra tech

New Zealand LCV - - NEWS | ROUND-UP -

ITS LOOKS HAVE BEEN TWEAKED, IT GETS TECHNOLOGY upgrades, but the 2018 model year ASX crossover SUV costs the same as the 2017 version.

Styling-wise, there’s a new front bumper and chrome trim, front and rear LED daytime-running lights, a glossy black centre panel, honeycomb grille and a silver tailgate garnish.

In the cabin, seats get high-grade cloth upholstery and leathereffect sports trim that is echoed on a new floor console.

The exterior silver detailing is picked up on the door-mounted window switch panel, and a new centre panel houses two USB ports and the Active Stability Control. On VRX models, the seat heater switch is there too.

All models have new gearshift positioning and gain a low gear (L) for climbing steep hills; it also provides strong engine braking at low speeds.

Smartphone Link Display Audio (SDA) is standard on all ASX models, and the ASX is compatible with iphone (IOS 8.0+) or Android (5.0+) devices to make and receive calls, manage text messages through voice control, navigate the route, and play music.

Mitsubishi NZ’S sales and marketing boss, Daniel Cook, says SDA technology gives drivers access to their smartphones’ functionality while “keeping both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.”

Mitsubishi has also beefed up the ASX’S sound insulation to reduce road noise.

On the safety front, range-topping VRX models get Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning and Auto High Beam.

Forward Collision Mitigation uses laser radar and camera technology to determine whether a frontal collision with a vehicle or pedestrian is imminent.

If so, it warns the driver with audible and visual signals and applies moderate to emergency braking to prevent a collision or reduce its severity.

Lane Departure Warning alerts drivers if they drift off-course, and Auto High Beam detects there are no vehicles ahead or approaching it turns on full beam to improve visibility.

ASX prices start at $29,990 plus on-road costs, and have a 10-year/160,000km powertrain warranty, five-year/130,000km new vehicle warranty and five-year/130,000km roadside assist.

Upgraded Mitsubishi ASX crossover has been refreshed for 2018 model year.
