Flu has struck New Zealand with a vengeance this year. Figures from the Institute of Environmental Science and Research show 188 people a week have been admitted to hospital and diagnosed with the flu since the middle of June. That’s almost double the number of lurgy sufferers from the same time last year.
Auckland, Waikato and Wellington have recorded the highest rates of influenza. Flu admissions at Auckland City Hospital for the month of July more than tripled from last year – 136, against 41 in 2016.
