The Best of the Week
SATURDAY OCTOBER 21
Afternoon Concert (RNZ Concert, 3.00pm). It’s possibly too early in the afternoon for Bach by Candlelight from this year’s Adam Chamber Music Festival in Nelson, but nevertheless there’s Andrew Goodwin’s glorious vocals, marimba player Ian Rosenbaum presents a new take on Cello Suite No 5, Monique Lapin performs Violin Concerto in A minor and the evening ends with the effervescent Brandenburg Concerto No 6.
SUNDAY OCTOBER 22
Afternoon Concert (RNZ Concert, 3.00pm). Chamber music is alive and well in New Zealand, if the hundreds of ensembles competing in the NZCT Chamber Music Contest are anything to go by. The youth music competition, which is open to secondary school musicians, is more than 50 years old and “the standard has increased exponentially over the years”, says adjudicator Brigid O’Meeghan. This broadcast features the six finalists: Buda and the Pests; Raysken Trio; Amadeus; Mahuta
Trio; TrioAstor; and Druz’ya Quartet, plus a demonstration performance by the Virtuoso Strings Quintet.
MONDAY OCTOBER 23
The Gardeners of Kabul (RNZ National, 7.06pm). Meet the green thumbs of Afghanistan’s capital: in this BBC documentary, Ali Hamedani meets gardeners who are nurturing roses, geraniums and grapevines in tiny backyards and front-yard plots. He also visits the 16th-century Gardens of Babur, destroyed in the 1990s, which are once again a feature of the city.
FRIDAY OCTOBER 27
Music Alive (RNZ Concert, 6.30pm). Korean pianist Joyce Yang makes her NZSO debut in tonight’s live concert from Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre, and she’s taking on Rachmaninov’s notoriously difficult Piano Concerto No 3. It’s so tricky that the pianist to whom it was dedicated, Josef Hofmann, never performed it publicly. It’s an evening of Rachmaninov under Edo de Waart, beginning with the yearning masterpiece Vocalise and ending with Symphonic Dances. There are several piano performances this week: Xing Wang plays Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 20 on Saturday ( Music Alive, 7.00pm) and things get crazy on Monday’s Pianomania with Freddy Kempf (noon).
