Forestry deaths

New Zealand Logger - - Forest Talk -

TWO FORESTRY DEATHS IN THE PAST MONTH HAVE BROUGHT the toll this year to five – the second highest since ten lives were lost in 2013.

A 20-year-old man died in a Marlborough forest when a wheeled log hauler came off a track – his name had not been released when NZ Logger went to print.

Less than a week later, Te Oho Mauri Piripi ‘Piri’ Bartlet (23) died in a remote forest near Tolaga Bay, on the East Coast. His was the second death to hit the family in a year, after Piri’s relative and talented rugby player, Niko Brooking-Hodgson, died in the Pohakura Forest in August last year. Piri leaves a fiancé and baby son.

Police and WorkSafe NZ are investigating both incidents.
