Indica Moana Ratima

Ask yourself, what were you doing at 13?

When faced with a draining G-land lineup many a grown man has all of a sudden had a fin crack, developed a sore knee, or once been

coaxed into the lineup pulled the old knife paddle and yelled out after missing the wave

“arrrrggggh damn it, I wanted that pit sooo bad”, when they actually had no intentions of catching it. Pictured here is Indie Ratima who after spending a couple of months holidaying with her dad in Indo was faced with an eight foot day at one of the worlds most intimidating

waves, what did she do? Not only did she paddle out, she spun and called everyone off the wave and dropped into this ‘Speedies’ pit. So the next time you think, man that’s gnarly out there, remember this girl. Mad respect

Indie, we salute, you Go-Girl. Age: 13 From: Raglan School: Raglan Area School.

How long Surfing? My dad first put me on a board when I was two, but I think I’ve been surfing full on for seven years. Sponsors: Rip Curl, Raglan Surf.Co.

Surfing Achievements: Uhm I dont really have any. I guess just making it where I am today.

Interests: Netball, soccer, swimming, running. Goals: Someday making the World Tour.

Your idea of a good time: Surfing with my friends and having a laugh, always a great time.

Fave food: Sushi. What do you think of smokers? It smells really bad

and it doesn’t make you cool. What do you think of bodyboarding? I think it’s fun. Any hints for learners: Go hard or go home.

Hahahhaha. How many trips have you been on in Indo and what breaks have you surfed? This is my third trip, I’ve surfed G-land, Kuta Beach, Airport Lefts, Dreamland, Bingin, Padang Padang, Uluwatu. G-land can be a very intimidating wave, but you look to have taken to it like a duck to water, how does it feel being out there with big long barrels spinning down the line toward you and razor sharp coral lying a few feet underneath? It’s really scary but fun, I’ve never seen such an amazing wave right in front of me. Does it help having a dad that charges? Does he worry for you at all? I wouldn’t say he charges. Hahahaha na he does. Uhm yeah I guess. He does worry a lot when we’re out in the water, I can see it in his eyes. He stays with me the whole session, sometimes I tell him to go away. As a young girl, are other surfers in the lineup supportive? Or do they just burn and snake you? Uhm that’s a hard one, I guess there’s two lots of people in the water some supporting me and others that snake me.
