New Zealand Surfing - - 5 On Five -

I wanted to go everywhere for this swell but couldn’t make my mind up where to go, then I got a message from a mate and all he said was “Mentawai’s on a boat for 10 days u in?” Add to that we were to be going on Doris’s boat the Raja Elang, you would have to be mad to pass this trip up. Because the swell was looking so good we decided to avoid the general Mentawai’s milk run and go looking for something different. We definitely found what we were looking for when the swell arrived, and the two biggest days were mental; the swell was coming in so thick on one afternoon that some of the waves you couldn’t even paddle down, as you were just getting sucked back up the face when it drew off the reef. I had never seen anything like that in Indo before. We ended up scoring waves all around the many islands, even when the swell dropped a bit, that’s the luxury of having a skipper like Doris who knows the Indonesian Archipelago better than most. An all round epic trip and everyone was stoked, can’t wait to get back there again.
