An insider’s guide to... The Whitsundays

-

WHERE TO STAY: Airlie Beach, on Queensland’s mainland, is a great base for all of your sea and sky adventures. Try Airlie Beach Hotel (airliebeachhotel.com.au) for a comfortable no-frills option, or the gorgeous Coral Sea Resort (coralsearesort.com/airliebeach) if you want a more upmarket stay – they have the most comfy hammocks on their balconies!

YOU HAVE TO TRY: If you’re staying in Airlie Beach, a visit to Walters Lounge for sunset dinner and drinks should be on the top of your list. They have a great selection of oysters and shared plates, but our group couldn’t get enough of the ceviche. We begged for the recipe. Visit walterslounge.com.au.

TOP TIP: If you’re going to the Whitsundays during summer (November-March), be prepared to wear a stinger suit if you’re venturing into the water. The tropical waters do contain irukandji jellyfish, which are only just bigger than a match head. But don’t worry, stinger suits are lighter than a wetsuit and easy to put on.
