Wonder worms

-

Ihave one raised garden where I grow all my salad vegetables for the table, but because it is raised, I find it needs a lot more attention when it comes to keeping the soil healthy. I always add liberal amounts of compost and sheep pellets to the soil, but then I discovered online instructions for making a mini worm farm in the garden out of some old PVC pipe.

To make a little worm farm, you need a piece of PVC pipe* about 1m long. Drill large holes all around the bottom half of the pipe, then bury that end into the soil. Next, throw food scraps down the pipe, put an old plant pot or a saucer over the top and let the worms go to work. They will eat the food and then take the nutrients through the holes, back into the soil. Mine is just a plain white one, but I’ve seen on the internet examples of people painting them with flowers and they look terrific.

* Please note that some

PVC pipes can produce a carcinogenic dust when cut or drilled, so wear a mask for this task.
