Dear Wendyl,

Do you have an oven-cleaning recipe? I hate cleaning the oven and always get a headache when using oven cleaners from the store. Hopefully you have something with not too many chemicals? Thanks, Jane

Cleaning your oven with a commercial cleaner is potentially one of the most toxic things we do in our homes. Yet a mix of baking soda and soda ash can do the job for you. You won’t get a headache from the fumes or be polluting your house, but do wear rubber gloves as washing soda can be caustic. OVEN CLEANER

Mix together 1 cup each of soda ash and baking soda. Sprinkle in the oven to cover. Spray with water until very damp and keep moist by spraying every few hours.

Let set overnight. In the morning, scoop it all up along with the grime, then rinse. If your oven is in a really bad way and has a lot of baked-on grime and grease, you may need to pour some vinegar over the washing soda. Let it fizz for 10 minutes, then scrub with steel wool. Keep applying both the washing soda and the vinegar, then scrubbing until all the grime has gone. * Soda ash can be bought online or use washing soda.
