BAKE IT FORWARD

KUDOS TO ALL OUR WEEKLY BAKERS – YOU HUMBLED US WITH YOUR SWEET ACHIEVEMENTS

-

We asked and you responded in droves by baking and sharing your favourite cakes

Abirthday celebration never quite feels complete without blowing out the candles on a delicious cake. But we decided to do it a bit differently for the Weekly’s 85th birthday.

After our fabulous food editor Nici Wickes scoured our archives for our most-loved cake recipes, we put it to a vote with the help of our friends at Countdown.

The votes poured in, with New Zealanders crowning the carrot cake as their favourite Kiwi Classic Cake. Then we encouraged you all to get baking! Perhaps it was a delicious carrot cake or your favourite baking recipe, but the idea was to pay it forward or “Bake It Forward”.

We asked you to give your cake to someone who really deserved a batch of fresh baking. After all, taking the time and care to bake for someone else is such a wonderful Kiwi way of showing others our love and affection.

We received an extraordinary number of entries from Weekly readers showing us the creations they had whipped up – and the stories of who they chose to Bake It Forward to had us reaching for the tissue box! It was a truly inspiring reminder of how many thoughtful, kind and caring Kiwis are out there.

It was a tough job picking a favourite, but one entry really did take the cake. Our winner is Christine Wilson from Whangarei, who won $1000 in Countdown vouchers, plus she also receives an additional $1000 in Countdown vouchers to Pay It Forward. Congratulations!

Here is Christine’s gorgeous, heartfelt entry:
