I have never forgotten my first trip to Rotorua. We went by car and as a seven-year-old, it seemed to take forever to get there. I was fascinated with the buried village and remember looking up at a tree where there was a Singer sewing machine stuck. We were told it was thrown there by the earthquake when the Pink and White Terraces were lost. We went to Whakarewarewa and were shown around by a beautiful Maori woman. I had my picture taken with her and later found out she was indeed the famous Rangitiaria Dennan, better known as Guide Rangi. My grandfather also took me in a ver y small plane to fly around to see Rotorua from the air. I loved it. He told me years later, he was green when we landed.
