DIVA no more

New Zealand Woman’s Weekly - - CELEB UPDATE -

Yes, she might bathe in milk, but Mariah Carey isn’t a diva, thank you very much – well, according to her anyway.

In a remarkably candid interview in a British newspaper, the superstar singer took the opportunity not only to discuss her mental health, but her long-rumoured “diva antics” – and says that she’s not as demanding as people think.

Slamming rumours that she insists on new toilet seats and gold taps in her hotel rooms, and that she once asked for 100 white doves and 20 white kittens in a tour rider – “I’m not a cat lady” – Mariah did admit to the slightly bizarre bathing ritual of using milk instead of water.

“Sometimes I use it as a beauty treatment,” she says. “I don’t want to give away all my secrets.”

As well as light-heartedly chatting about her reputation, Christmas and her kids – she’s mum to seven-yearold twins Moroccan and Monroe – Mariah also talked about her battle with bipolar disorder, a condition she kept hidden until this year.

She reckons she developed it during childhood from being the product of a mixed-race relationship – her mum was Irish-American, while her dad was both African- American and Afro-Venezuelan.

“It was a combination of being bi-racial and experiencing the darker side of life,” she says. “My mum experienced a lot of racism as an opera singer because she was married to a black man.”

Mariah’s diagnosis came after a breakdown in 2001, where she turned up to the set of a talk show uninvited and did a striptease. “I have very low self-esteem,” she admits, though she says she feels proud when she listens back to a song she’s recorded.

Now, Mariah’s preferring to focus her efforts around Christmas, where she is the undisputed queen of the airwaves, and to parenting her twins, who are the result of her second marriage to television presenter Nick Cannon.

She’s also in a relationship with backing dancer Bryan Tanaka, following her high-profile split with media mogul James Packer.

Mariah is focused on her twins, Moroccan and Monroe, who she had with ex Nick Cannon.
