Balls flew and sausages were barbecued at Excelsior rugby football clubs’ annual Family Day on Sunday. The club holds the event every year to bring everyone back together before training begins. Management staff cooked the barbecue as everyone else headed to the playing field to get a bit of exercise for the afternoon. Senior team coach Jason Webb said the day was about doing something involving the whole family. The day included activities such as golf, touch and frisbee. The senior team was set to start training next week as pre-season games would begin in March. ‘‘We use the time to get the boys back together,’’ Webb said. The team would see most of its players return next season but a few players had left to take the next step up in their rugby careers. ‘‘A couple have gone to play in town and a couple of others have gone overseas,’’ he said. The goal for coach Webb and his team was to begin getting fit well before the season started and to pass on knowledge to younger players who would take the field for Excelsior for the first time next season. The Council of Rugby Clubs had still not decided on its structuring for round robin games next season so Webb and his team were yet to know what level they will be

playing next year.
