No-one can condone the actions of the driver ill-treating bobby calves that FarmWatch released last week.
But the method in which the footage was obtained should not be condoned either.
Sneaking onto private land to hide cameras in sheds isn’t very clever.
It’s malicious at worst and illegal at best.
The police have to follow the law to carry out surveillance on a property, so why is no-one jumping up and down about this self-appointed farming industry watchdog sneaking around?
Rural burglaries are on the rise, so if they’re hanging around farm buildings at night they’re lucky they haven’t been dealt to by a suspicious insomniac farmer.
Perhaps if MPI was funded sufficiently its inspectors could keep more of an eye on the industry and catch the odd dodgy driver in the act, instead of it all being done in a cloak and dagger manner.
