Local drivers to compete in Silver Fern Rally
Two Gore rally drivers will race on familiar roads when the Silver Fern Rally hits Gore next week.
Derek Ayson will be putting his Ford Escort through its paces with co-driver Gavin McDermott, and Andrew Graves will be codriving for Ally MacKay in a Ford Escort Mk2.
Highlands Motorsport Park owner Tony Quinn will be driving a Toyota 86 and Vince Bristow, who won the rally last year, will defend his title in a Ford Escort MKII RS 1800.
The rally’s 100 drivers and codrivers, plus their support crews will begin their race south from Christchurch on Monday and will overnight in Gore next Thursday.
They will complete five special stages during the day, including three in the Gore district before they park up at the Gore A&P Showgrounds to service their vehicles.
Spectators are welcome to look at the cars during the service break but are asked to park outside.
The cars will then be moved to the trout statue green in the centre of Gore for the night, where motorsport fans will have the chance to talk to the drivers.
The first car will leave Gore at 8:45am on Friday morning, heading for Dunedin for another overnight stay, before continuing to Timaru.
The rally finishes in Christchurch on Sunday.
