Lo­cal driv­ers to com­pete in Sil­ver Fern Rally

Two Gore rally driv­ers will race on fa­mil­iar roads when the Sil­ver Fern Rally hits Gore next week.

Derek Ayson will be putting his Ford Es­cort through its paces with co-driver Gavin McDer­mott, and An­drew Graves will be co­driv­ing for Ally MacKay in a Ford Es­cort Mk2.

High­lands Motorsport Park owner Tony Quinn will be driv­ing a Toy­ota 86 and Vince Bris­tow, who won the rally last year, will de­fend his ti­tle in a Ford Es­cort MKII RS 1800.

The rally’s 100 driv­ers and co­drivers, plus their sup­port crews will be­gin their race south from Christchurch on Mon­day and will overnight in Gore next Thurs­day.

They will com­plete five spe­cial stages dur­ing the day, in­clud­ing three in the Gore district be­fore they park up at the Gore A&P Show­grounds to ser­vice their ve­hi­cles.

Spec­ta­tors are wel­come to look at the cars dur­ing the ser­vice break but are asked to park out­side.

The cars will then be moved to the trout statue green in the cen­tre of Gore for the night, where motorsport fans will have the chance to talk to the driv­ers.

The first car will leave Gore at 8:45am on Fri­day morn­ing, head­ing for Dunedin for an­other overnight stay, be­fore con­tin­u­ing to Ti­maru.

The rally fin­ishes in Christchurch on Sun­day.

Gore’s Derek Ayson will be racing in the Sil­ver Fern Rally next week.
