Gore’s retailers and council should be applauded for being one of the first in the country to make a decision about allowing shopping on Easter Sunday.

It was quite simple - the town’s shops are shut anyway, so why do anything different?

But gee we need to get Southland Anniversary Day sorted.

If you were in town on Tuesday you might have found life a bit frustrating.

Some businesses were open and some were closed because some, like our office, observe the holiday back in January - the day it used to be.

A search online reveals that the day was changed to April back in 2011 - so why can’t we get it together and all have the same day off?

Southland’s three mayors decided to change the day so everyone could have an extra long Easter - so shouldn’t we all follow suit? Well done to everyone who dragged themselves off to work on Tuesday.
