Two drivers recorded high breath alcohol levels when they were stopped by police at the weekend, acting sergeant Dave Leach said. A 37-year-old male, who was also a disqualified driver, recorded a level of 904mcg when he was stopped on Stratford St in Gore, and a 23-year-old female recorded a level of 868mcg when she was stopped on Broughton St. ‘‘It’s a concern that people are not getting the message,’’ he said.
DOG TO SEARCH FOR VELVETLEAF
Environment Southland will use a sniffer dog in its search for velvetleaf this season. Rusty the velvetleaf detector and owner John Taylor, of Invercargill, will spend three days working for ES on some of Southland’s highest risk farms. Rusty will search properties where velvetleaf was found closest to seeding last year. Farmers are still being urged to check their properties regularly and report any signs of the weed, which has the potential to devastate future crops by competing for nutrients and water.
