It’s usually farmers that get the big pointy stick thrust in their direction in conversations about who is polluting our waterways.

We’ve all seen photos of cows in rivers, after all.

Twice in the last week we’ve read of sewage seeping into waterways in two of our tourist hotspots with not a bovine in sight. Swimmers have been dipping their peepers in untreated sewerage in Lake Wanaka for six years, and the Queenstown Lakes District Council has breached environmental standards when sewage from its new $30m plant has spilled into the Shotover River. Just the sort of news we want tourists to be reading when they’re spending up large in our resort towns.

And while our farmers could find themselves slapped with a fine or standing in the dock for polluting, there seems to be very little talk of the QLDC facing the same drama. Surely if we all have to take responsibility for cleaning up our waterways, we should all be subject to the same punishment when we get it wrong too.
