Members of Northern Southland College’s new Young Farmer’s Club have found out that fundraising isn’t easy, but they’ve managed to share some of their hard-earned cash with fellow classmates.

Pupils of the school have set up the club this year with help from Otago Southland TeenAg advisor Leanne Woodhead.

They join quite a few clubs set up in Southland.

NSC YFC support teacher Jean Little said Woodhead suggested some initial projects for the club to get started on.

‘‘One idea they took up was to design a jersey or some sort of top as a uniform and seek sponsorship or do some sort of fundraising so they didn’t have to pay the total cost of purchase themselves.

‘‘Nic Bennett, mother of the club president, Josh Bennett, was instrumental in setting up and organising much of this.’’

Pupils decided on ready-made jerseys from the local Farmland’s branch which were good quality casual farm jerseys. They would cost $80 each. ‘‘They listed businesses in Balfour, Athol, Lumsden and Mossburn, made up a flyer and a letter and shared out visiting all those businesses between the 15 members,’’Little said.

‘‘Nic visited many more in Gore, resulting in great raffle and quiz prizes as well as auction prizes for their planned quiz night, with the generosity greatly appreciated by the students.’’

Little said it was a huge effort by all involved.

‘‘They felt it was well worth it as the jerseys cost them $10 or $20 each in the end depending on the effort they put in individually

‘‘This cost included the logos of YFC, NSC and Southern Workwear, which did the lettering for free.’’

The team shared some of the generosity they’d experienced with some of the school’s other pupils.

‘‘The quiz raised more money than was needed for the jerseys, so some of it went as a donation to the Agrikids team who went to the finals in Fielding, with a small amount kept in the club for future events.

‘‘The team members are delighted with their new jerseys which look very smart when we are on YFC outings, business or competitions.’’
