Market Day for Mossburn

‘‘It is another way of bringing locals together, supporting the senior citizens and giving people different food choices.’’ Anna Yates

A desire for locally produced goods has provided impetus for a monthly Market Day at Mossburn, opening on the Sunday of Labour weekend.

Co-organiser Anna Yates from Otautau said Mossburn is an ideal spot, with its keen local producers and farmers, along with the travelling public, especially tourists.

‘‘One of the ideas is to get a full range of gluten free, organic and dairy-free options available for the increasing number of people who are looking for those products, including different flavoured gluten free pies such as beef and chicken,’’ she said.

Honey Bee Keepers Southland will have a display at the market, including a virtual hive and an educational observation hive.

There will be information about the declining bee numbers and what people can do to help that situation, such as growing trees for bees.

Members of the Mossburn organising group are working with locals to get a full range of stalls, so customers have a good range and variety to choose from.

With the emphasis on growing and eating local, including off-thefarm produce, there will be honey, packaged pre-cooked meals, fresh meat, farm eggs and a good choice of preserves, jams and pickles.

‘‘Local crafters with soaps, cheeses, salami, children’s clothes and knitting will sit alongside vegetable plants and some fresh vegetables, although these will increase as summer approaches,’’ Yates said.

Several artists paintings for sale.

The local senior citizens’ group will have Devonshire teas for sale inside their rooms while the stalls sell produce outside.

‘‘It is another way of bringing locals together, supporting the senior citizens and giving people different food choices,’’ Yates said.

‘‘There are lots of possibilities of other producers joining in later if they are not able to come on the Sunday of Labour weekend, with ideas already bubbling up for future possibilities around our theme.’’ ❚ Mossburn Market day: Sunday October 22, 10am to 2pm, Mossburn Senior Citizens, R.S.A Hall, Devon St. For more information or to book a stall, phone 03 2486474, or email: jolind will have their
