Farmers fleeced as stock rustled
Two hundred ewes were taken from a farm near Riversdale and two rams have been found butchered near Balfour, prompting police to warn the rural community to be vigilant.
Senior Constable Adam Roberts said a truck would have been needed to move the ewes, which were reported missing from a grazing block on the PyramidWaipounamu Rd near Riversdale about two months ago.
‘‘Whoever took them needed their own land to put them on and the means to be able to move them.’’
It was possible they had been integrated into an existing herd, he said.
The two rams were found butchered on a farm on Stefan Rd at Balfour last week.
Roberts said people living in rural areas needed to report anything they thought was suspicious to police when they saw it, so it could be checked out at the time.
‘‘It’s summer time and people are out and about so they need to be more vigilant.
‘‘If you see something and you think it’s not quite right, either stop and check it out or give police a call straight away so that we can. We have no problem at all being called out to a false alarm; that’s better than having to investigate a crime later on.’’
Anyone with information about the rustling could contact Roberts at the Riversdale station on (03) 2024140.
