Twelve-year-old sus­pected in rob­bery

Po­lice have charged four male youths over the ag­gra­vated rob­bery of the Sun­beam Milk Bar in Gore on Oc­to­ber 5.

A 16-year-old, two 15-year-olds and a 14-yearold have been charged and are ex­pected to ap­pear in the In­ver­cargill Youth Court on Novem­ber 10, po­lice said in a press re­lease on Tues­day.

A 12 year old al­leged of­fender has been re­ferred to Youth Aid.

Owner Ed­die Cooney told Newslink he was alone in the shop when three boys wear­ing bal­a­clavas charged in.

He was threat­ened with a ma­chete and his hand was cut.

Cooney, who has run the dairy for more than 40 years, in­stalled cam­eras af­ter the at­tack, which was the third to tar­get his shop.

He was thank­ful for the sup­port of lo­cal busi­nesses and the com­mu­nity.

‘‘I can’t thank them enough for their gen­eros­ity.’’

Sergeant Greg Bal­lan­tyne said po­lice would like to thank mem­bers of the Gore and east­ern South­land com­mu­nity who have been ex­tremely help­ful in pro­vid­ing in­for­ma­tion that has as­sisted po­lice.

‘‘I’d also like to ac­knowl­edge the kind peo­ple who have helped the vic­tim and his fam­ily through this dif­fi­cult time. They are very grate­ful for this as­sis­tance.’’
