To im­prove your bal­ance in the long run, tai chi could be the ex­er­cise for you. A re­view of 10 ran­domised tri­als found that tai chi re­duced the in­ci­dence of falls in el­derly peo­ple by 43%, with some ev­i­dence show­ing that it re­duced the num­ber of falls re­sult­ing in in­jury. Lead au­thor Rafael Lo­mas-Vega from the Univer­sity of Jaén in Spain says he would recommend it as “a safe prac­tice for the pre­ven­tion of falls”, adding that some re­views also found tai chi had pos­i­tive ef­fects on chronic con­di­tions, such as can­cer, os­teoarthri­tis and heart fail­ure.
