Re­serve poach­ing watched

Peo­ple at­tempt­ing to take seafood from Long Bay-Okura Ma­rine Re­serve this sum­mer are likely to get caught, the Con­ser­va­tion Depart­ment warns.

Ma­rine ranger Martin Stan­ley says they monitor and reg­u­larly pa­trol the re­serve and work closely with po­lice and other agen­cies to catch of­fend­ers.

Two men were fined $500 each and or­dered to pay court costs af­ter plead­ing guilty in the North Shore District Court to tak­ing from a ma­rine re­serve.

They were caught fish­ing from their boat within the Long Bay Ma­rine Re­serve by two pa­trol- ling Con­ser­va­tion Depart­ment of­fi­cers. Mr Stan­ley says the men hadn’t caught any­thing.

A North Shore res­i­dent pleaded guilty to tak­ing kina from the re­serve last win­ter.
