Reserve poaching watched
People attempting to take seafood from Long Bay-Okura Marine Reserve this summer are likely to get caught, the Conservation Department warns.
Marine ranger Martin Stanley says they monitor and regularly patrol the reserve and work closely with police and other agencies to catch offenders.
Two men were fined $500 each and ordered to pay court costs after pleading guilty in the North Shore District Court to taking from a marine reserve.
They were caught fishing from their boat within the Long Bay Marine Reserve by two patrol- ling Conservation Department officers. Mr Stanley says the men hadn’t caught anything.
A North Shore resident pleaded guilty to taking kina from the reserve last winter.
