Cap­tur­ing sum­mer: School hol­i­day art classes at Lake House Arts Cen­tre

Taka­puna’s his­toric Lake House Arts Cen­tre has es­tab­lished it­self as one of New Zealand’s lead­ing arts cen­tres for all ages and abil­i­ties, with pop­u­lar school hol­i­day pro­grammes and on­go­ing chil­dren’s and adult classes at times to suit busy lives.

Due to its pop­u­lar­ity, the Jan­uary 2011 school hol­i­day pro­gramme for chil­dren aged five years and up has been ex­tended to two and a half weeks.

Run­ning from Jan­uary 12 to 28 in Fred Thomas Drive, Taka­puna, its theme for this year is ‘Sum­mer in the Pa­cific’.

Paci­fica Paint­ing with tu­tor Denice Sy­mons has classes for 8-12 and 13-16 year olds, pro­duc­ing paint­ings and col­lages.

Other art and craft classes fea­ture in­spi­ra­tional ob­jects and themes such as trop­i­cal plants, sum­mer fruits, shells, trop­i­cal fish, birds of par­adise, sea ab­stracts, mer­maids, beach gear, Kiwi beach and un­der­wa­ter scenes, Chi­nese kites, Asian paper and Luau lanterns, Samoan fans, Hawai­ian surf­board dec­o­ra­tions, painted fab- ric beach bags, pin­hole pho­tog­ra­phy, beach pic­ture frames and much more – us­ing a va­ri­ety of me­dia.

Kids can stay all day and lunchtime su­per­vi­sion is free.

The ‘ Sum­mer in the Pa­cific’ pro­gramme is now un­der­way so you will need to book early.

Term One’s arts ed­u­ca­tion pro­gramme kicks off on Fe­bru­ary 1.

Classes in­clude acrylic paint­ing with tu­tor An­neke Laan, wa­ter­colours with Joanne Mor­ti­more, ce­ramic sculp­ture with Bill Hayes and draw­ing and mixed me­dia classes for all ages with res­i­dent artist Denice Sy­mons.

There are also the pop­u­lar week­end work­shops for busy peo­ple who can­not com­mit to a term class.

These short in­ten­sive six-hour classes give the stu­dent a chance to try out new dis­ci­plines and skills.

New to the pro­gramme are felt­ing cour­ses and a print­ing course learn­ing how to use wood­cuts.

The af­ter school pro­gramme for chil­dren of­fers small classes with pas­sion­ate and qual­i­fied tu­tors who will give that per­son­alised at­ten­tion and ex­ten­sion to your child.
