Boys in touch with medals

North Harbour News - - SPORT -

New Zealand’s under-19 boys touch rugby team clinched the transtasman series 2-1 after beating Australia 8-7 in Canberra last Sunday.

Showing equal flair and determination, the boys produced an inspiring performance to end the tournament on an unforgettable note.

In another classic match between the two teams, the final result went down to the wire with North Harbour’s Chris Swains diving over a defender, catching the ball in mid-air and planting it for a winning lastminute touchdown.

‘‘As soon as we scored that touchdown in the corner I knew we had it in the bag.

‘‘I can’t describe the feeling. It tops any achievement for me,’’ captain Tivoli Guthrie says.

‘‘The series win by the under-19s is a great example of the work that has been done to prepare our boys for the elite men’s grade,’’ Touch New Zealand chief executive officer Joe Sprangers says.

Australia won the overall series after clinching the under-19 girls, under-21 women and under-21 men’s.

Celebration time: The New Zealand under-19 boys team show off their medals after winning the transtasman touch series against Australia last weekend.
