Celebrate 125 years

Greenhithe School is kicking off its birthday festivities on October 20.

-

Let’s go back and party... like it’s 1900.

Greenhithe School pupils have been preparing for their school’s 125th anniversary by researching school life in any decade from 1900 to 2000.

Come Friday, they’ll be dressed up in keeping with the decade they’ve researched, with exhibits on display in classrooms as part of the school’s open day.

It also includes a jubilee parade and time capsule ceremony in the evening.

The evening mix-and-mingle event is one of the highlights of the celebration, the organising committee’s chairman Jason Willis said.

‘‘We’re hoping that it will be past teachers as well - so staff in the school, kids from the school, and you know, parents that had kids at the school,’’ he said.

‘‘The school’s changed quite a lot.’’

Willis said it would be interesting for people to see how the school had grown as part of the ‘‘exponential growth’’ in the area itself, including the new classrooms which opened in July.

A tour, including out to Hobsonville Point, by local Greenhithe heritage expert Mitchell Hutchings will be held on Saturday.

The time capsule - a barrel - will be buried on early Friday evening, a relic to be dug up in another 50 years or so.

Unfortunately the location of the previous time capsule isn’t know, but this time the site will be carefully recorded, Willis said.
