Blessing for new hub

Construction of a long-awaited community space for Upper Harbour residents is now complete.

The new Albany Hub was blessed in the presence of 40 attendees, including the Upper Harbour Local Board, Kaumatua Otene Reweti and Auckland Council staff on July 6.

Situated beside Albany House off Albany Highway, the hub offers bookable spaces for community use.

Upper Harbour Local Board chairwoman Lisa Whyte said the building is ‘‘lovely’’.

Much thought had gone into the colour palette which includes historical references to fruit-growing in the area and the native Kowhai tree, she said.

The hub contains four bookable spaces - two meeting rooms, an interview room and a hall. There is also a demonstration kitchen and a courtyard.

Auckland Council will manage the hub for the first 12-18 months, after which it will shift to community-led management.

Work on the $1.2 million hub started in November 2016.

It was a legacy project from the former North Shore City Council that was taken on by the Upper Harbour Local Board.

Albany Hub will be open for bookings from August 1.
