FROM THE EDITOR

North Shore Times - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS -

There’s no doubt Takapuna’s Anzac Car Park is a ‘‘field of dreams’’ but whose dream is the question. North Shore ward councillor Chris Darby must feel a little like the beleaguered Ray Kinsella of the movie, pursuing his vision with limited community support. It’s good to dream and I like Darby’s suggestions of an amphitheatre, large trees to picnic beneath, or a multifunctional sports space. However, in his Spinoff article, Darby also puts forward a ‘‘noir’’ option with tall buildings casting shadows across segmented zones. This sounds a lot more like the drawings in Panuku’s ‘‘Unlock Takapuna Framework Plan’’ found at shapeauckland.co.nz where you can also make a submission. Our cover image is from that plan and shows the area largely taken up with tall buildings, with public space chiefly the existing Potters Park to the chilly south. The plans suggest moving the Sunday Market to Smales Farm, which stallholders say is a draughty spot. You have until September 4 to submit and share your own dreams for the area. - Jodi Yeats
