Bays celebrate league win
The East Coast Bays premier rugby league team are showing their junior players there is a future at the club.
The Barracudas based in Freyberg Park, Browns Bay, came from behind at half time to win the Auckland Rugby League Sharman Plate Trophy over Waitemata.
The Waitemata Seagulls were leading 12-4 at half time but the East Coast Bays team came back in the second half to win the plate and the title.
Barracuda Jack Allen scored a try in the final minutes to secure the win and finish with a score of 20-16.
There were also tries to Ian Mills (2) and Cameron Nicholas with conversions from Caleb Carter.
Jamaal Ropata was awarded player of the day for his ‘‘outstanding work rate’’ in both attack and defence.
President of the club and player Justin Barr said this win followed a great season under coach Ross Hilton.
Hilton said to win the Sharman plate means a lot to this group who have been working since November last year.
‘‘These guys don’t get paid to play, they play because they want to be with their mates. For our small club, the Sharman plate trophy lets our younger players know they don’t have to leave the club to win something. Bring on next season.’’
