At just 17, Amy Irvine already dreams of being a diplomat, or on the United Nations.

And she’s chasing her dreams. She’s been selected for the UN Youth Global Development Tour in early 2018.

Along with 21 other students, she’ll visit seven countries and learn about international politics.

They’ll visit everything from New York’s United Nations headquarters to Rome’s Food and Agriculture Organisation.

‘‘It’s an education trip. We’re learning about the political system and sustainable development goals,’’ Irvine said.

‘‘We’ll be visiting some UN institutes, talking to people working within the UN and other organisations involved in sustainable development.’’

The Albany resident is particularly excited to take part in a model UN in New York, which sees students represent a nation in mock discussions

Irvine said being involved in the United Nations youth branch means meeting likeminded and interesting people, as well as learning new skills.

‘‘What inspired me was there are very few opportunities in New Zealand like this. New Zealand is quite small, so any opportunity we get to see the world is important, particularly with my interest in international politics.’’

The focus of the trip is on the UN’s sustainable development goals and Irvine is fundraising on Givealittle.co.nz.

Amy Irvine, 17, has been selected for the Global Development Tour.
