Club needs roof repair

- FELICITY REID

Takapuna Rugby Club members do not want another winter of watermarks on the walls and puddles on the floor.

So, before the ‘‘full force of winter’’ arrives, the club based at Onewa Domain plans to have nailed down the funding for roof repairs.

The clubrooms opened in 1973, thanks to the time and dollars of the rugby community, and the club is reaching out again to supporters to help raise the $50,000 needed for substantial repairs.

Club chairman Simon Cheesman said the roof, like all outside areas, while being kept in okay condition, has been worsening over the last couple of years.

‘‘While Sandra [Southworth, club manager] does a great job with buckets and cleaning up, the time has come to resolve the issue before any other major damage may be caused by the rain and worsening conditions,’’ Cheesman said.

‘‘We simply don’t want to devalue the asset and put the club at risk of more expensive other works down the line.’’

To raise the money for the roof repair, the club is calling on supporters to contribute by purchasing a symbolic nail for $250. Everyone who donates will also be recognised on a special plaque within the club following project completion. Contact the club via email takapuna_rugby@xtra.co.nz to find out how to contribute.
