FROM THE NEWS DESK
As many of you are well aware, it is Ma¯ori Language Week and here at North Waikato News, we invited our community kura tuatahi (primary schools) to help us celebrate this very special week. Using the theme Kia ora te reo Ma¯ori, participating students created art work to depict themes which celebrate the greeting. Ka pai to all those who came up with some highly creative pieces. While it’s not too late for anyone to build on their language skills, it’s our younger generation that are going to keep it going for years to come and so the cycle will continue. As part of this little project, we had a $50 voucher up for grabs to one student and the winner is Alexis Muru from Huntly Primary School. I truly hope to many of you learn something new this week, even if it’s just a new word because it’s such a special thing we have in Aotearoa. In other news, we also want to celebrate the fact that Stuff and its print mastheads have also adopted macrons. We look forward to this change and learning more about the language.
