FROM THE EDITOR

Northern News - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE -

Have you ever been absolutely terrified by something seemingly irrational?

You know, that type of fear that makes you feel a bit clammy and nauseous - something that triggers the primitive fight or flight response which probably means it should be avoided at all costs?

For me that fear has always been public speaking. But earlier this year, I decided to do something about it.

I joined Toastmasters. It was a huge step, and an extremely uncomfortable one. Standing up in front of others and stating your opinion or speaking your truth is revealing - you feel exposed.

Week after week, meeting after meeting, I turn up and confront that fear. It’s still uncomfortable and I suspect it always will be but having the support of an absolutely lovely bunch of people has been amazing and invaluable.

They genuinely want you to succeed, even though sometimes we’re our own harshest critic. That’s priceless.
